چکیده

Online citizen science [Silvertown 2009] can be seen as a form of collective intelligence Lévy [1997] and Woolley et al. [2010] in which the wisdom of the crowd is applied to the Web to advance scientific knowledge [Prestopnik and Crowston 2012] Thus far, online citizen science projects [Bonney et al. 2009; Gray et al. 2012] have applied millions of volunteers to solving problems in a wide array of scientific domains, ranging from the classification of galaxies [Fortson et al. 2011] to the completion of protein folding networks [Khatib et al. 2011]. Central to many of these projects are online messaging or discussion facilities designed to allow volunteers to ask one another questions and advice. Such facilities have in many cases yielded substantial, dedicated self-sustaining online communities. In this paper, we examine participation in such communities; specifically, whether participation in online discussion influences task completion within and across 10 distinct projects of a shared citizen science platform, the Zooniverse1. Our study was conducted on a dataset from December 2009 to July 2013, in which 250, 000 users contributed over 50 million tasks and 650, 000 discussion posts.

Exploring Collective Intelligence Games with Design Science: a Citizen Science Design Case

Citizen science is a form of collective intelligence where members of the public are recruited to contribute to scientific investigations. Citizen science projects often use web-based systems to support collaborative scientific activities, but finding ways to attract participants and confirm the veracity of the data produced by non-scientists are key research questions. We describe a series of ...

Machine Learning and Citizen Science: Opportunities and Challenges of Human-Computer Interaction

Background and Aim: In processing large data, scientists have to perform the tedious task of analyzing hefty bulk of data. Machine learning techniques are a potential solution to this problem. In citizen science, human and artificial intelligence may be unified to facilitate this effort. Considering the ambiguities in machine performance and management of user-generated data, this paper aims to...

Argumentation Logic as a Formal Foundation for Collective Intelligence Systems: a Roadmap

Collective intelligence is shared (or group) intelligence that emerges when aggregating the collective efforts of many individuals (Woolley et al., 2010). The success of collective intelligence (CI) systems rely heavily on the effectiveness of the aggregation mechanism (Surowiecki, 2005). Individuals may contribute a simple data element (for instance, a number representing an estimated or predi...

A Computational Model of Crowds for Collective Intelligence

A new and rapidly emerging paradigm of socio-technical systems for collective intelligence can be found in the increasing use of IT-mediated crowds by organizations for knowledge purposes. In this domain, Crowdsourcing [Brabham 2008, 2010] is being widely applied in a growing number of contexts, and the knowledge generated from these phenomena is well-documented [Huberman 2008, Huberman et al. ...
